Am I the only 20-something (or really, the only First-Worlder) without a smartphone?
I am the only person I know without a smartphone (by choice). Not only do I not want to get sucked into a contract I have zero interest in maintaining (I still use a prepaid phone), but I also get annoyed by how all of my friends/family/acquaintances use theirs as a crutch. For example, is it not rude to constantly be on your phone when I invite you over since we haven't hung out in ages? And you're ignoring me because you're texting someone you see everyday/checking your Facebook/etc.? Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

I don't own one but since I want to keep better contact with my friends overseas I think I have tom cave.
I hate those new age phones.
A phone is supposed to make a fookin call! I have a computer for surfing the damn web!Like (4)

A smartphone for what? I have two stupid phones which work just fine, although I seldom use them.

No and welcome to my world....im in my late 40s and I still have an old prepaid Next G flip phone that is actually on the old GSM network with an old GSM simcard, it works and does the basics so Ive not really considered getting a smart phone. Theyre too smart for me. lol

i'll be devil's advocate for smartphones (well androids, anyway... i think iphones are dumb phones, judging by my experiences on the ipod touch). anyway, the reason i upgraded to a smartphone was for backup in case my tablet went wrong, or even just if my son was using it when i wanted to, and for a more compact version of my tablet to use while out. i have the same gmail on both phone and tablet, which means they are interchangeable for email and some other apps i use. some of the useful things my smart phone (which is just the cheapest prepaid) can do include: maps, much more compact than a bulky street directory; internet banking, so i can transfer money from my son's passbook account to my account and then withdraw it from the atm for him; email as a free substitute for texting, as they have exactly the same alert sound; trip planner for public transport so i can time my arrival to the station/stop exactly; web browser, so if there's anything i urgently need to know while out and about, i can find out; calendar and notes app with heaps of storage, not the limit of 20 items on my old phone; portable wifi hotspot, so i can use my ipod while out, or in case my tablet which is on a different carrier either can't get coverage or runs out of data plan. those are probably the main things that are very very useful on my smart phone. mind you, i tend to do the non-useful anti-social things mostly on the tablet or ipod, is why my phone is purely useful and not anti-social.

most of the things i use my smartphone for don't connect me to anyone socioelectronically (new word). even most of my tablet use doesn't, since i don't do much other than come here once every day or three. i have email notifications from this site disabled, so that i don't get bombarded with emails to my phone & tablet. i think most people on facebook, etc have email notifications switched on, because that's the default, and that's what keeps them hooked. or if they access facebook via the app, that probably pushes notifications to them constantly too. i don't think they realize just how much facebook, twitter, etc have intruded into their lives. they are not using facebook, facebook is using them.Like (1)

Hey--I like you. I don't have one either but I'm so much older. I'm the only person who bought a hundred thousand dollars of Facebook when it was at 17 and I've never been on Facebook. For some weird reason--I like here but other than that--I'm reading a book or working. I got no one that I care enough about to share all day long.

You'll get one. Oh yes.
And when you do, everyone will start chanting "One of us! One of us! One of us!"Like (1)

Oh, you are like a breath of fresh air!
I am not young, but am nagged by people to get a "smart" phone. Why? I am happy with my 'normal' one - it makes and receives calls & texts, takes pictures, has an alarm and is quite compact. Why do I need more? I agree with you that people are becoming rude by continuing to do things on their phones while talking or buying goods in shops. However did we survive all these thousands of years, without them? lol
