When I was growing up, being able to admit you were wrong and had changed your mind was seen as a sign of character strength. When did the ablity to grow and change get branded "two-faced hypocrisy"?

Depends on your point of view.
sed on those facts, grow, and change, his son's orientation has forced him to look at reality and he has embraced that reality. Therefore, he grew into understanding and is not a hypocrite.
From a dogmatic political point of view, yes, he is a two faced hypocrite who has betrayed his party and his country.
From a pessimists point of view, he is using his son as an excuse to match his position to what the polls say will get him re-elected.
