Any ideas on "mystery scratches"; usually found on waking, look too small and symmetrical to be fingernails?

I'm a moderator on a paranormal forum and we're getting a LOT of reports of this experience, and I can't find much at all on the net of other people having this, or the ones that do, on medical sites, there are no answers.

I doubt it's paranormal but I'm not sure what it is, as the people have shown pictures that look more like they were scratched with a very small sharp object, like the end of a clothes hanger, and a lot of them have 3 to 8 symmetrical scratches, a couple inches long. My guesses are feathers or something else sticking out from bed or pillow, own fingernails, tiny rocks or something in the bed - most don't have animals.

Scratches occur on various body parts, back, side, ankles, some arms, on different people. Some even claim they occur during the course of the day, in a matter of minutes, noticing suddenly the marks - though this might be an issue of oblivousness until a certain point.

It is NOT coincidental that people participating in a "paranormal forum" would exhibit what they fear are "paranormal" scratches on their body, especially if others on the forum are exhibiting this obviously attention-getting behavior.
