Yes it works. At the dosage I was taking, it takes about a month for it to get into your system. When you stop, it takes about a month for it to leave. It does cause people skin irritation problems at high doses though. Since it takes a month before you notice the effects, most people give up and assume that it doesn't work. Once it is in your system, you will start noticing that you are having very vivid, and enjoyable dreams. It only takes away the irrational depression. It doesn't somehow magically make life great, but it does definitely works.

It works the same way as a real selective-serotonin-reuptake inhibitor...except not as well.
I have found 5-htp useful, and it's OTC.
