It can be a good decision or a terrible decision. If the degree will be in a field that has no hope of gainful employment, as many are now, it is a waste of money and more importantly, time. All the cashiers at Macy's have some degree in some worthless field of study. I went, but on an athletic scholarship. My sisters all went on academic scholarships. if not for that, none of us could have gone. Our family had nothing.
It was expected of me, I went, but I didn't end up in debt--my grandfather and parents paid. Our daughter didn't end up in debt either, but it meant we scrimped and saved from the day we adopted her to be able to afford the tuition, fees, etc. No vacations, no fixing up the house except when necessary, etc., but she got out debt-free
Done that. Had a good career.
