It's only good if you are buying things in bulk, and even then not always.

If you have the time, and are halfway decent with coupons and finding sales, you'd be better off not joining.

I read that the average person doesn't save enough money per year buying at Costco to cover the membership fee. And the checkout lines are always HUGE.

I read an article on grocery savings in Consumer Reports. Their reporter went on a mission to discover whether or not he could net the biggest savings by couponing, going to a big discount house like Sam's Club or Costco, or by watching the specials and flyers or shopping the super market brand names.

He shopped for the identical items in each instance, and ultimately he netted the most savings by consistently purchasing the supermarket brand name items only. He did NOT save as much money by going to the big discount houses, or by couponing.
Thanks for the comment. Where did you get the print? It looks just like my own Siamese cat, Leo.

I was a member of Sam's Club and I got rid of my membership because it really wasn't any different from shopping at Walmart. Just bigger sizes. That didn't really help me because at the time I was single so I didn't need a 5 gallon tub of queso. Plus, I wasn't throwing huge parties or into catering or had a ton of children.
I liked and joined Costco because many of their brand "Kirkland" products are good. I like their liquid fabric softener and their cracker selection (Carr's Water Crackers). I use it for paper towels, toilet paper, big items that you use a lot of. When my mother died, her casket came from Costco online. It was beautiful and loads cheaper than the funeral home.
I'm single and I have a warehouse membership mostly because it's good for hurricane prep.
You do have to know your prices because not everything is cheaper. The main thing I noticed that is more expensive than say Target is disposable razors or razor blades. I did the math and the warehouse was a fair amount higher in price and I don't really need 36 razors.
I also don't need 72 rolls of toilet paper and paper towels either......unless a storm is coming. So if you know your prices just do the math first and you'll be okay.

If you have a need to buy something in bulk, even if it's only one thing, then yes. If not, then it's not worth it.

Best Answer

I believe it is worth it,but be cautious. Some items are an excelllent deal, but not everything is cheaper by the dozen. :)

Go for it. I save enough by getting my contact lenses there to more than pay for my membership. Lots of good buys and free food samples, too...lol

I'm not sure if this covers contact lenses but you don't have to be a member to buy prescription drugs at their pharmacy. Because prescription drugs are controlled by the federal government, Costco can't bar you from accessing them. It might be worth checking into to see if prescription lenses fall into that category as well...
