personally I find the best pictures (the most flattering) are the ones where the subject is caught unawares. Its the purposeful posing that makes you look unnatural and contrived.

Make sure you shower before the pictures are being taken. Come to think of it, maybe shower while the pictures are being taken. Those pictures would look fantastic!

Stand slightly side on to the camera.

Be aware of the lighting. Shadows are good as long as there is good contrast with lit areas. Dim rooms can result in grainy photos. Start with a high resolution, and don't have the flash too close to the subject. And don't downplay the beauty of a nice black and white image.
