I think it might help to see emotionally numb as a bank account when it is negative. So many withdrawls have been made with no deposits and not it is way past empty. When things in our lives hurt to deeply we subconciously flip the switch to off. We just cannot take one more feeling. But as others have said, time heals. You will slowly begin to open that door and let emotions through. Even when the door is open, you will have days that seem overwhelming; but that is all they are, days. You will get through them with the help of those you are close too. Never shut everyone in your life out, you need those connections of different levels to help you heal. It does get easier, never gone, but easier to cope with.

Yes, it happened to me. But the old saying is, "time heals all wounds", and I found that to be true. You do eventually learn to move on and live and feel again.

Yes, the advantages of numbness are recklessness. If you get stagnated by fear, this can be used beneficially.

Also, an appreciation of any hurt which lets you still feel connected. Realizing when you haven't lost that can be a revelation.

I'm going through that know. I fear I will emotionally disconnect from those who mean most to me even though they are not the source of the pain.

You should read this post...

When my son died, there was nothing but pain... and then there was nothing. Then the anger, the denial, then the bargaining, then the depression, and finally the acceptance. Everyone says that time will heal, and it will, but sometimes it's hard to even accept the fact that the sun is still rising at all and people are still going on and things have not stopped to give you time to heal and start feeling again. When the feelings start again, do not hold back, let it all go out loud, that will make it all start to move along again. Hang in there, eventually you will find a blessing, even in the pain.

Yep I was that way after my divorce. I was in Iraq and told my wife at the time I would be getting home in a couple weeks when she told me that I needed to find another place to live. I found my bank account empty, no one to pick me up from the plane and later found out she had rake up 10k in cedit cards in my name as well as had a boyfriend that was 20 years older than her about 2 months after I first left. Numb was an understanment. It took about a year before I cared about alot of things again and decided to start looking to date again as well.
