Anyone farmiliar with steam home heating systems?

I'm wondering what causes the pipes that carry steam to the radiators in the apartment above me to click and bang very loudly and violently. Its gotten to the point that it wakes me up. I've been living there for 6 years and this winter is the first time its this loud.

That event is called water hammer. Water can't travel as fast as steam and when some of the steam condenses in the line and gets carried into the steam circuit prior to entering the radiator ,everytime the mixture reaches a bend in the circuit, steam slams the water trapped in front of it into the fitting causing the noise.

Not familiar with steam home heating systems. But, my tea pot steams and whistles when it gets hot! :-)
