I bawled over my rat, Baldwin. You wouldn't expect rats to make such good pets, but they're actually very friendly. Baldwin liked to ride on my shoulder all day like a pirate's parrot. We had a daily ritual where I'd stick my finger in his cage, and he'd hold it in his little paws and lick it. A couple of times, I sneaked him into the movie theater, where he sat on my lap and sampled my popcorn. I went away to camp one summer, and when I came home, the first thing I wanted to do was say hi to him. He wasn't in his cage, and my mom explained that he'd died for no apparent reason.
