I want to do some checks on things but don't have a credit card or money. I'm looking for one that doesn't need to be "committed" to for a year or a month. lol. If you've used a site, please let me know what kind of results you've gotten. Was it easy to do, easy to understand, that kind of thing?.... Thks UPDATE:: Serious answers only PLZ!

We have to do extensive background checks in our business. Not only are there no free ones I know of, but several of the ones you pay for do nothing more than run a search engine through public phone books. So a "clean record" can really mean they did a crap job of searching. And some of the pay sites will give you limited information, and then want to charge you more for the total results. Unlike a private investigator or real security firm, those sites aren't regulated at all. They can promise whatever they want and deliver very little and you have no legal recourse.

If you're serious about it, talk to a private investigator and ask what he'd charge for a basic background check on someone. At least then you'll get something for your money.

Thank you. I think I'll do that. Appreciate the serious & informative answer.

Intellius does charge but they can get some good basic information for you pretty quickly. And you can learn more from public records offices if you are in the area of the person you want to check.

Thanks BB. Not close but it helps to get some ideas. Intellius. I'll check that out. : )

you've got no credit card or money? and you're this eager? I understand this was 10 months ago that you asked but how important is it if you're not willing to use a credit card and put a few bucks down for an online background check...

just a heads up, if you've got a criminal record or any civil charges, judgments, etc employers will be able to find this out.

there are many websites which do this, one of the most popular is Been Verified. Here, I document my experience with been verified:

according to their terms of service (and many other commercialized data broker websites) this site cannot be used as a way to determine eligibility for employment, housing, or anything like that.

but sites like Been Verified are often cheaper than the more professional companies geared for employment screening and specifically, Been Verified offers a free 7 day trial.

There isn’t a site that does free background checks, however a pretty through DIY background check can be done on someone for little to no money. I have a background in investigations and risk mitigation and I was thinking of writing an e-book that explained step-by-step how to do a background check on someone yourself. It would be a how to and explain the limitations. I would love to know if anyone would be interested in something like that such as (those hiring a Nanny, cleaning lady, daycare provider, or just a small business hiring employees).
