as far as how it works, it balances the seratonin (a nuerotransmitter) in your brain. It's a seratonin reuptake inhibitor . suddenly stopping an SRI isn't a good idea because it upsets the balance of chemicals in your brain that control mood..

I've had some pretty severe side effects from missing a single dose, so I think stopping suddenly would be terrible. I think the "brain buzz" and the mood swings from missing would make you very unhappy.

I've read the way to get off is to have your doc give another anti-depressent and gradually step down.

I took it for about five years. It altered my entire personality while I was on it. I tried to stop taking it a couple of times and had headaches and heart palpitations so severe that I went back on it. Finally, at my begging, my doctor worked with me to get off of it. I will NEVER take it again. My depression also became worse while I was on it and I even had thoughts of suicide. Surely there are better meds than this. Good luck with it. I hope you don't have the problems I did... you should read about the horrible side effects of it though.

took for awhile when prozac stopped working (was actually happy on p-zac). took it about a month- made me angry!! called the gp, wanted his $$$ office visit. well that pissed me off- why do i have be seen for a script change? i think he's just a money grubbing doc like they all are. so i said 'f' that, and just stopped. it stopped the anger after about 2 days, but then slipped into a bit of a depression/sleepiness/not giving a damn, blew off appointments, etc.worked and slept. lasted 2 months! decided then on, never be on meds like that again.
when I went back to the doc 8-9 months later for a back problem, he didn't bat an eye when i said I wasn't taking it anymore. whatever.

when I took cymbalta I forgot to fill my script and missed a couple days worth and was feeling really weird. I asked my pharmacist if just those few days could mess with me like that and he said yes. I don't take that stuff anymore.

I took cymbalta for about 4.5 years. It worked great, until one day it just stopped working for me. I think the body builds up an immunity after a period of time. I am now on something else. Only side effect I experienced when taking it was a dry mouth.
