Are martial arts a matter of quantity or quality?

Let me explain : would you like to be more or less average with all of weapons (blunt, slashing, piercing, ranged);
An expert on just one type (If blunt then , staves, quarterstaves, maces, flails; or if it's piercing weapons , then stilettos, daggers, knives, short swords)
A master in a specific brand of weapons (bows and shortbows but not throwing knives or being a master in long and bastard swords but not katanas)
Or a Grand Master in one very specific weapon : Two handed swords, One handed axes, Scimitars, Polearms, Daggers, etc)

Is This A Good Question? (3)

you can do quality of learning a little of everything. Or quality of just learning one thing. Either way both are just as powerful, just different. Just make whatever you do quality :)

But you'll be a jack-of all trades if you choose to pick a little from everywhere, that's what I meant with quantity.

Well since I'd be doing it all for fun I'd rather be average in all of my favorite forms. I'm sure there'd be one or two that I'd favorite the most and become good at.

I love straight sword, but I also want to try rope-dart, tiger hooks, staff, etc. So many things I'd love to just comfortably play around with.

    So quantity.

You're on the line between a cuttthroat and the Faerûn Batman.

Cutthroat? How so? And Faerun Batman? I'm jealous I've never heard of this. I'm not worthy of the bat now.

quality of the art you want to master. for example, Aikido, it is based on the circle, yet, it is also done with the downward cutting motion.
I studied Jujitsu, Tae kwon Do, and Hapkido. I prefer using my apponents force against himself, and the cutting motion of the art. :)

That's a very elaborate way of saying "hand to hand, please".

I'd rather be an expert in two specific types in two different classes (ranged vs close combat)

...in a modern day that would probably be sniper rifle and carbine
...in a more classical setting composite bow and dual scimitars

I would want to be an expert at all of them.

But if you know hand to hand combat, especially involving hitting an opponent's specific nerves, then you can do well without weapons. I watch some of Master Angelo's videos on YouTube :-)

I know! And those Indian martial artists specialized in kalaaripayatu are also amazing. It's so fast and looks simple but it is not, lol!

you actually can be a quality fighter with random objects, but it has definitely been proven time and time again that it's quality that beats quantity in martial arts

You can hardly beat on a horde of goblins by merging with the environement.
