Don't forget, before the Civil War southerners were the most educated, most cultured, best mannered, highly refined, wealthiest people of the United States. The problem was, like any advanced civilization it was built on slavery. The South could not or would not abandon the practice when the time arrived. Those who truly despised slavery joined with the jealous and the opportunists, elected a president (in a 4 way race) bent on crushing the South and then, so ensued the bloodiest war in America's history. Southerners are now considered second class citizens and are ashamed of the accent that reveals the heritage for which they should hold great pride.

"Fiddle-dee-dee", as Scarlett O'Hara (my Southern sister) would say.
