Paulo Freire, a brilliant educationalist, critically examines ways that education, religion and politics can serve the interests of the powerful, in that in many forms they encourage people to simply accept, rather than engage, with their world. True education should teach people to engage with their world to develop a critical consciousness, rather than simply be socialised into the mores and values that encourage passivity. <br />

He says the culture of silence can cause the "dominated individuals [to] lose the means by which to critically respond to the culture that is forced on them by a dominant culture."

We use freire's approach in working with the poor. Poverty tends to exacerbate the sense of powerlessness, that you have to accept your lot in life. So as a group they reflect on their world in different ways to understand it better, and find opportunities to become actors within it, not the acted upon. We consciously avoid manipulating the process (but not simple to do) - it has to be shaped by them. Their seeing, their agenda.
