Resolved Question

Are you a good friend until you need a friend yourself?

In other words, do you allow your friends to be friends to you when you are hurting?

I have a friend, my old neighbour, and living so close for those years (we became friends after I moved in next door) we became very close - we would cook each other meals all the time, but especially when the other was ill, she is automatically invited to my family functions and vice versa.

Through her, I met another wonderful person, who spent an entire weekend helping me move out, which included scrubbing the last place down from top to bottom, all to make sure I would get my deposit back - i would do anything for her as well.

Strangely, the two friends I have known for years - one I even lived with for a year or two, only seem to be around when they need me, one didn't bother to contact me for two years until she found herself in a hostel - obviously my home was open to her, and the other i leant 40 quid to, and have only had 20 back - she should know by now that i am not bothered, but acknowledgement would be good.

And my oldest friend disappears for years on end, then we catch up briefly - that's the way it will always be between us, however he has given me the most personally wonderful gift ever - he introduced me to the loveliest man in the world!

I always try to be the friend I would want to have. Afterall, "do unto others as you would have them do to you"!

I hope I've been a good friend. Have a little hard time with the concept of time though. Blessed to have the people in my life that I do. When I go through difficult times I never feel alone 'cause I know that there's always someone there if I just reach out.

I allow people to help me who want too, but for the most part I sort out my own problems and try and help people sort out theirs in the easiest way possible :)

It's exceptionally difficult for me to do that. I'm not good about relying on other people.

I am the best friend one could ever hope to have, no doubt about it...sounds conceited but many friends tell me that quite regularly (probably the result of my doing an overabundance of favors for them, is my guess).

However, if I find MYSELF in need of a similar friend, I'm stuck. I really don't have a friend who can return a favor for me at the magnitude that I perform them for others. It's ok, though...I've grown accustomed to it.

I find it easier to be there for my friends than to have them help me...not used to rely on people for help.
