Some girls do have very thick hymens and it can be very painful to penetrate them the first time. Most girls today, however, don't, and they have been active enough athletically that they may have no bleeding or discomfort at all the first time. OTOH, if it has been a long time since a woman had intercourse and she is not fully aroused, the man might think she was a virgin b/c of the discomfort, possible bleeding and difficulty. Asking is the best way.

If you've ever ridden a bike, done trampolining, horseriding or any other athletic pastime, chances are your hymen no longer exists anyway! I didn't bleed my first time; it did hurt a bit - the only thing i can rememeber with any clarity is that it was rubbish! I remember thinking 'is this what all the fuss is about?'
