Sold a book that took six cold reads to get accepted by my publisher. Used to never have any cold reads of a manuscript and felt really bad until my friend a huge bestseller handed me her manuscript-900 pages--and said she needed a cold read too. Bad economy for everyone. And I did her read in ten straight hours. That's very hard with loose pages, and you have to put stick em's wherever you 'feel' something about the plot. And a cold read is when you've sold the manuscript already and the publisher--your editor insists that someone who knows nothing about the book reads it and proves it worthy. So, six is really excruciating since you already spent the advance.
