Resolved Question

Are you fully mexican and can't speak spanish?

I was adopted at the age of 2 from mexico. I had to relearn how to talk. I was given to white people. at the age of 6 i was dumped and re-adopted by more white people. i tried taking spanish in school but i only got through a year of it. I hate the sound of spanish. So I only speak english. Now whenever a random mexican sees me they start speaking spanish at me, then realize that i don't speak it, then the questions follow as to why don't.

I want to know if anyone else goes through this nightmare on a daily basis.

I knew this guy who was Puerto Rican and failed Spanish at school, even though his family taught him Spanish at home --- if that makes you feel any better.

I also know a guy who is Japanese and who can't speak Japanese. He was born there and lived there until his parents sent him to the U.S. to school. Somehow, he missed the boat and never learned Japanese properly. He feels like an outsider whenever he goes home to his family.

I'm half hispanic, and I look it. People come up to me every other day and speak to me in spanish, and I can't answer them. Heck, I took 5 yrs of Spanish class in school, but I just couldn't stand the language. But, I oddly speak fluent lebanese arabic, because thats my other half I feel more connected to.

Its an awful feeling. Kinda like pushing your identity away. A little self hating, and awkward actually. I understand.

My parents were Mexican, but I was born in the US. Spanish was my first language. Then I entered school and had to speak english. Gradually I became more fluent in english than spanish. Now I struggle to translate certain words to spanish. Very frustrating, especially since I live on the border.
