No; in some countries, it is part of the culture. It has advantages and disadvantages. The advantage can be that a spouse is chosen by the parents who know their children; this can make for very happy and peaceful relations between the couple and their respective families. The disadvantage is lack of choice, though in the instances I know of personally, the spouse always retained the right of veto. The real disadvantage is that everything proceeds so quickly and with much ceremony and expense; it is easy to get caught up in it and not think clearly about it until it is too late.
