Dear Intruderlvr,

Go Navy! Having never had daughters, only sons, I cannot answer based on great wisdom based on experience. With my sons, both grown with families of their own now, my rule was basically, if it can be washed off, taken off, or easily changed, I tried not to make a big deal about it. I reserved the major battles for tattoos and body-piercing, which I did not allow while they lived in my home. I discouraged, with explanation, but did not mandate hair cuts, clothing, etc.

I would allow only occasional "playtime" or special event makeup for a girl under 11 or 12, depending upon her maturity. I believe that it would be difficult and foolish to take a hard stand against makeup for a girl much older than about 11 or 12, as long as it is moderate, subtle and not every day. If your wife or another mature woman is part of the household and has a light hand with her own makeup, she should take the opportunity to bond with your daughter by showing her how to apply makeup, how not to use it, and to calibrate her use to be reasonable. I would discourage every day use of makeup as it is not particularly good for the pores of the skins and may encourage development of acne. At the same time, a lot of makeup these days contains sun-blocking agents that protect the skin from UV light that damages skin.

Many schools do not allow young girls to wear makeup, so you need to check with her school on the rules and enforce them.

Bottom line -- its not an issue I would draw any lines in the sand over. Bigger and more difficult issues are getting ready to arise if she is thinking about makeup. Save your ammunition until the Huns are coming over the walls, and always keep one round to put yourself out of your misery.

I don't know.. wrong person to ask.

I always thought it looked dumb on girls

I used to clown my peers saying "why don't you just go all the way and dress like a clown?" lol
and I would honk their nose if I thought they looked real foolish..

I started 15, cause my friends did too, we wanted to look older. I don't it's not a big deal, unless it's not overused and dont make them look like clowns.

I think perhaps at 14-15....not too much though.

I think that I would want by daughter to be comfortable without make up, but allow her the freedom to use it if she wished.

I feel that girls should be allowed to wear make up at home from the age of 10 and at school from the age of 14. This allows 4 years for them to practice applying it. It is always wise to pay for a couple of make up lessons for them, so they can learn the importance of choosing the right colours and going for a more natural look. They should be reminded that to much face make up will give them spots and that models always choose natural make up, apart from when they are modelling for Haute Couture. This is sure to put them off of over doing it. If you ban make up at this age, instead of encouraging guided experimentation with it, then your child will rebel, hide it in their bags and then put it on anyway, probably extremely badly.

My daughter started at 15yrs, but it was just to enhance her beauty...she likes the natural look!...if one of her friends have too much makup on, she tells them cause she's knows they'll be laughed at.

First a trip to a great makeup counter is in order. The young lady should not looklike a member of Ringling Bros. 14 is the age I was first allowed to wear a little bit of blush and vaseline on my lips. And now, my girls are not even interested in makeup. They are into the good clean skin look...and that is totally ok with me.

When their parents think it is appropriate - for myself, that'd be 14 or 15, as long as she isn't getting totally tarted up.

well, when they start showing interest, the wheel is already in motion. companies are marketing cosmetics to them at a very young age. it's hard to say no....let her learn on her own...her peers will let her know if she's wearing too much. one thing you could do is relate your permission to wear cosmetics to her grades, if you really want to fight that battle. my niece is almost 13 and has been wearing it for quite some time because she performs in parades, twirling baton, and in plays at school. (she's as wholesome & sweet as can be...hope it stays that way - if not, it's not because of the make-up) like i say, fashion is for fun! it's a form of expression, see where it takes her. could be interesting! it's tough to see your little girl grow up but it's going to happen with or without makeup!

I would say that most teenagers start wanting to wear makeup in jr. high school... like 12-14 years old. Mine went to a private school so they couldn't wear any during school, but they did wear a little bit for a fancy occasion. They really didn't get into make up until high school... and even now, at 16 and 18 they really only wear a little bit unless they are going to a dance or a party.
