Be honest, if you saw a man/woman abusing his/her dog in public, would you try to ignore it/leave, or try to stop it?

This happened in my neighborhood once. A careless owner beat his dog for running away. He was on his phone, and the dog pulled away, making the leash slip out of the man's hand. The man caught up to his dog, took off his belt and began hitting him in front of my friend's house. I was 12, and despite my age (he looked about 40 - something), I was ready to confront the guy, but my mom told me not to because she was afraid he'd do something against us (since whatever she was afraid would happen to us, happened to one of her friends). So I couldn't do anything. Luckily, a woman came over to him and told him that if she'd call the cops if she saw him doing that ever again... He was her neighbor.

I felt guilty not going out there, but I'm also glad that the lady went out to defend that dog.

I would absolutely go mad then - animals are like children - helpless and innocent. I would kick his ***.

They are animals not children. Do you eat children? People eat animals!

    Your pets are considered children.

Yes, I would have to do something. The law is way behind in my opinion, seeing a dog as 'property'. 100 years ago women were 'property', - how long before everyone can see the obvious - which is if its living and breathing, it is more than just that, it is entitled to live its life free from pain and fear.

I have also stopped an incident of bullying when I saw some children lay into a boy at the bus station. I am just not having it, - and they can see that. If more of us did the right thing at times like that, we could make it a better, safer world for the helpless to live in. Its about being just and fair, nothing more. If its unjust, I will not stand by and do nothing, not now, not in the future.

I'd go over and beat the cr*p out of him/her, or something. I'd video it, that's for sure, and turn 'em in, post the vid to YouTube, and mail the link of the vid to everyone.

I would have stopped him and call the cops and had him arrested because that is sick for somebody to beat up a poor innocent dog

Never encountered that before. But if the 'person' had the mental ability to actually take off their belt and start beating the dog I would take the belt out of their hand and call the cops.

I would call 911, it's illegal. Let the cops handle it.

Saw a man running top speed with a pitt bull pup to teach it to run. It was tired and fell and he proceeded to drag it down the road, the concrete tearing at its belly, paws and legs till it was bleeding. I yelled at that SOB to stop it and called the police then followed him in my car until the police arrived because he was trying to leave the area. Disgusting human being. The poor pup was laying on its side gasping for air when I stopped to help, all of the knobby areas on her legs like her ankles and all scraped to the bones. I wanted to kill that man.

omg...that man doesn't deserve a dog or the pleasure of owning any pet. I have intervened before and will do it again .... I can be and have been the abusers worst nightmare..... nothing gets me going more than animal abuse!

As a horse person, I witness abuse all the time. Mostly it is ignorance. People think that because an animal is big, it cannot feel as much pain or because it happens all the time, its acceptable. However it is more offensive if you point out how much pain you're causing than if you rather suggest a better, more effective and coincidentally humane training technique.

I'd like to think I'd stop it.

To be honest I tend to hide within myself (if that makes sense) when I'm out in public by myself. So I might not say something. If I am with someone I tend to be more open and chances are if I see it I'd say something then.

Regardless, I would call the police rather than approaching the person myself.

I would try to stop it. I can't abide animal cruelty. It kills me. No one should abuse others. That applies to adults, children and animals.

Ive seen this a lot in public and i find it disgusting ,my brother used to firmly tap the dog on the snout. and say "bad dog" and that was more effective than a heavy beating. I would only intervene if i thought someone was gonna seriously damage the animal.

I would have stopped it and taken the dog. You were just a kid, don't feel guilt..People that will beat an animal, rarely have a problem beating a human as well. :)

My dad whooped our dog with a belt when he tried to eat my brothers bird. He never tried to eat that bird again. The bird would even land in its head. The dog was fine. He learned his lesson.

If I can take her on I'd smash her, if I can't I'd get a friend to do it for me. Or call RSPCA

Already been there and had it reported. Sorry to say not a whole lot happened. But, at least they were spoken to and they knew people were watching them
