I always preferred the cedar to the pine, it was softer and cushier. Not sure about brands though, as I was not the one buying :/

Thanks for the input ! :) I recently decided to move my horse from pasture to a barn stall with mats so any advice on the shavings is a lot of help.

I was only a lowly barn worker, sorry I couldn't be of more help.

i worked at a barn for 5 years and as an assistant barn manager for 1yr and i can say that the best shavings we used were dust free pine wood shavings, they seemed to soak up alot more and it was fluffier than most others that and the dust was better controlled :) depending where you can find it the better quality is best for the horses ;)

I'll probably have to order it from elsewhere either way. I think my area is infamous for just putting horses in pastures so when I asked other owners about shavings they just look at me like it's unnecessary. Though, I spoil my babies so to me it certainly is. I already got high quality mats to go beneath the shavings so it will be easier to stand on.

oh we definately spoiled our babies too xD most were just boarders but we had a few school horses xD mats are great for the horses just be careful whats underneath that...if its cement it will stink worse as pee runs through the cracks and sits underneath the mat for however long :( eww lol had to use lime on the stall floors for that one...and if its just dirt or gravel...the horse can easily move the ground if its been soaked by pee which makes the whole floor a lumpy mess...had a horse do this and his back hurt for a week :( other than that hope you have good luck finding nice shavings :)
