    Black Friday was the name given to the Friday after Thanksgiving in the 60s by the Philadelphia Police Dept to describe traffic jams, shop lifters, jay walkers and massive crowds all shopping and taking advantage of sales after the holiday. Apparently it was used to deter people from going outside on that Friday as people could "get hurt" or "mugged" etc... It was later said to mean that stores having sales would "be in the black" from massive sales.

    No, companies want to get "out of the red"(losing money) and "into black."(profiting) Though I do wonder what the original circumstances for the coining of the term were....
