I was thinking that if it were a singularity then there wouldn't be a way to apply a topology as the singularity doesn't possess a space that is locally Euclidean. That and a singularity just means that the equations don't work at that point.

It could approach a singularity, like the Ricci Flow does, and maintain a ring topology.
