I find looking forward a better method for change than looking back. Just because you intend to change doesnt mean that you will not fall into the same traps and for the same tricks that we often set and play on ourselfs as we change. So do not set a standard between the mistakes of the past and your future this will set you up to fail because your life from start to finish will be littered with things you feel good or bad about. Instead focus on improving how you think about things, how you think about things is responsible for how you feel about things, and if you have an improved thought pattern about a certain activety or behaviour that has negative outcomes for you, then you become more aware of it and you will start to do it less :) Its not simple, there is no easy fix. It takes time commitment and honesty. At the end of your our lifes, looking back we will see things we have done, or ways in which we have behaived that let us down, this we have no control over. But what we can ply our effort to is the amount of these we see, its not a compitition, some people struggle less than others, but they struggle in other areas. The thing about change is not that you change, its that you put effort into yourself and progressively are better at dealing with life :)

People can change, and many do. But they have to do it themselves. It's not systematical growing.

I think they can change even without feeling bad about what they have done in the past. It doesn't mean it's likely to happen though.

People can change, but, you should always be cognizant of the fact that if they did it in the past then they have a propensity to do it again in the future. People need to "take care," as they so often advise each other to do.

The pain from not changing must be greater than the pain it takes to change. Psychologically, or physically.
