THey have sentience-but it cannot equate with humans-so while they have perception, it is limited

I assume so, pigeons can craft a piece of wire into the right shape to get seeds out of tubes etc.

I reckon that "Imagination" in it's broadest sense includes the ability to "think" - "If I do this...then this will happen". I was reading recently that many "higher" animals can do that, not just instinctive hunting type behaviours, but more sophisticated approaches. I saw an article (for instance) where a dog appeared to work out that humans couldn't see in the dark, and would more often steal food when the lights were off rather than on .This was classed as "using their imagination" - in terms of imaging how the human was restricted.
