The Knights Templar were a christian religious order of 'Warrior Monks". Founded during The Crusades against Islamic control of Jerusalem circa 1100 ad. Although all individual knights were sworn to poverty the Order as a whole became immensely rich, collecting duties from nearly all of the european nobility to fund their part in the crusades.
Later on they were reputed to be the guardians of The holy Grail. Which may not be the cup of christ but the Sangral, the holy bloodline, the descendants of Jesus Christ.
The orthodox church turned against the knights templar for this reason as orthodox teaching was that Jesus was not a man but the son of god, and that mary magdalene was a prostitute and destroyed all knowledge of them being married and having children.
The Knights Templar were all excommunicated and condemned to death, some few survived. For further information google for 'The Sangreal', 'The Merovingians'. Also look out for books by Philip Gardner, 'Genesis of the Grail Kings' being the most important. Hope this helps.
