This is a very interesting question. Studies have been done on children of alcoholics that found that the children break in one of two directions - either they become alcoholics themselves or they become non-drinkers. Disregarding any potential genetic causes, I think that the same is true of children who grew up in dysfunctional families. Either they carry the dysfunction to a new generation, or they become great parents because of their sensitivity to dysfunctionality.

I think it can yes.... if you recognize what the problems were in your family and work to not repeat those behaviors, then you will be a great parent. Adversity can make you stronger if you learn and grow from it!!

Yeah, I cam from a really crap family, my parents are druggos and left the country.
I am here with my girlfriend and her parents did the same thing.
We have a daughter and we are gonna raise her to the best of our ability, avoiding what happened in our memories of our crappy childhood. And we will try to be better parents than ours.

i dont know my father and his family although very loved by their father were all mentaly and verbaly abused my father ended up the same way although not as bad he's still an a$$ hole i cant stand him and i think that is because of his father i think that if you see the mistakes of your family and are different and have dreams to become better than yes you can become a better person. sadly there are those of us who never recognize the bad and are sucked into it.

Not necessarily. It is your readiness and your maturity when you bring a child into the world that makes you a good parent.

Yes, each human being has his/her own will, capacity and education to build a better family.

So long as you don't follow the patterns of before. You need to understand why your family was dysfunctionaly in order to not perpetuate it. So I guess you know what NOT to do.

I don't believe coming from a dysfunctional family can make you a better parent, because invariably you tend to make the same mistakes as your parents did. If you rectify the problems within your family you'll be able to provide a better childhood for your children, because the kind of up bringing parents give their children is usually a reflection of their childhood.

My mother comes from a very dysfunctional family, which has left her emotionally unstable, even a little problem in the family causes her a great deal of stress and she can't take decisions practically. My dad on the other hand, comes from a close-knit, happy family where everyone respected everyone and each of them very really close to one another; which he's doing now with his own family. He talks to my brother and me, we have a lot of laughs, but he also commands respect so we know we can't take any liberties with him. He's the splitting image of my grandfather.

Only if you understand the differences.

Yes, it sometimes can if you DO NOT WANT to be like THEM.

I think it's a catch 22. If you come from a dysfunctional family you will be better at some things but worse at others .... the same as if you came from a functional family you would be good at some things and worse at others (probably the opposite of each other)

There is no perfect parent. Those who are better parents are so because they care enough to try harder - that's all. At least that's what I think.

I don't know about that. Very tricky. By trying so very hard not to duplicate your history, theres a real danger of going too far in the other direction, searching blindly for a formula that works. If your orignal family was a happy one, you pretty much absorbed the formula effortlessly. Not that it can't be done! Its done every day.
