Everything we spend time with becomes a part of us. Sadness can just be a reaction, but if you 'get stuck' in the thoughts and troubles that keep you sad, it can become a part of you which is painful to let go.
Only if the sadness that you feel is in some way justified, in the sense that if feeling happy is an inappropriate mood to be in, in relation to your environment, it could be an intellectual decision that sadness is a `correct mood`, and if this is so, then you would be drawn to it and feel uneasy when out of it, almost a need for it, an answer close to a reply to your question.
By definition addictions trigger hormonal reward systems and sadness doesn't do that.

Yes! I experienced it. It's really bad for your mind & body. If you are addicted now or on the way, try to start enjoying things. It'll take a little time but you will soon start to really enjoy things and you will feel happy. Keep that happiness up and soon it'll all be ok! :)
Yes, it can be... People can choose to be happy or sad.. and some people become stuck in sadness, choosing to be sad when they could just as easily choose to be happy~
