Can selfish lead to altruism?

Watched a tv show last night in which it described how our personal selfishness (a proven inherent biological trait) evolves into Alturism by default over generations without a need for divine intervention. There is even a formula for it. Ironically it would seem that sentient life eventually realises the value of helping others as a way to help protect its own interests in the long run.

Comments, suggestions and does anyone else know any more?

There is a school of thought which says there is no such thing as true altruism. All deeds are generated (at some level) from selfish motives. These might be quite obscure and may not register consciously with the person doing the act. But, the theory says, these impulses are nevertheless based in the "self" rather than the "other" . . .

people change.
But I think you're referring to cooperation, which monkeys are capable of learning.

when you help others you can't help helping yourself. every time you do good deeds your also serving your own needs. when you help others you can't help helping yourself.

yeah....you can tell bu all these gangs, senseless violence, greed and molestations of the free market system ......... thinki'n they left a few mitigating factors out of their equation.........(btw - the contradictory terms in 'free market' should be indicative of just how well such as system would work i guess)
