Can someone explain to me what short-term memory loss is?

Ok I get that you can't remember what happens in the short term but would you suddenly remember a long time later? I know it sounds stupid but I am curious by nature.

Human memory is just like a computer. You have short term memory (like RAM) and long term memory (like your hard drive). Losing your short term memory is just like your computer not having enough RAM. Its still there (on your hard drive) but sometimes can't remember it as quickly. People with a loss of STM simply have bad or disrupted wiring which processes quick memory...sometimes putting it directly into your LTM.

Short-term memory is where we initially store our memories. If we're having a conversation with someone, the details of the conversation have not been there long enough to make it to where long-term memories are stored. Long term memories occur when something has been "re-written" in short-term memory a number of times.

That's why someone in the early stages of dementia can sometimes recall things from their youth, but can't remember what you said a minute ago.

I can't offer an explanation - I just know that I'm affected like this if I'm seriously over tired or if I'm trying to do loads of things at the same time. When I've had a decent sleep or slow down my short term memory returns.

My husband now has short term memory loss because of his 3 strokes. Some things that happen within days of each other he can't remember.Things that happened to him for example when he was in the hospital with his strokes(2004 and 2006) he has no memory whatsoever. One day he was sitting in my wheelchair that I use occasionally,he was sitting and using his legs to walk in the wheelchair and he suddenly remembered that he had done that in therapy almost 4 years ago and we'll both get happy because he remembered something. Now things that happen within days of each other or even hours,he can't remember some of them.He built a simple big box made of ply board for his grandsons toys, then a few weeks later he saw the box in a picture, our grandson was in the box of toys,my husband has no recollection of him building that toy box.One day he may remember but he may not.

My wife is a brittle diabetic and had a mild stroke as a result of low sugars (hypoglycemia). One direct result of that episode is short-term memory loss. She can't remember recent events or names or faces or what day of the week it is. She doesn't know the difference between 6AM and 6PM. The best comparison to STML is Alzheimer's Disease. It's very frustrating for both her and me.

Yes my father had 4 strokes went from being an independent person to being disabled

Short term memory is related to everything

if you have no short term memory you cant cook drive or anything

everything goes through short term memory to long term

So if short term is gone can't meet new people

it is also referred to as antrograde amnesia

for some people it is temporary for most it is permanent

Hope that helps if you have specific questions please feel free to ask me

When you get in the car and start driving and then you get lost in a familiar place because they changed the roads recently and then you don't remember where you were going. Like my grarndpa did.
