Resolved Question

Can someone help me understand her reason?

I applied to the Art Institute of Philly. I told my mom and grandma and asked for $50 to pay for the application fee. They said I shouldn't go and I should take art classes at the local community college. My mom couldn't talk but she was going on and on about how it took her 18 years to become an LPN. She got pregnant with me and she decided to quit. I don't have children and have no responsibility beside paying my cell phone bill and getting to work on time. I only work sixteen-twenty hours a week unless someone goes on vacation. And my grandma wants me out and kept complaining last night how much she hates me. Now they are saying I don't need to move to Philly even though they want me to go to college. All I want is to own my own business and run a store! That's it! Its for Fashion Marketing by the way.

They don't want you to be an artist. I got the same response "community/liberal arts college" when I tried to also. Maybe they don't want you to move away. Like to the san francisco art institute and "living in california is too expensive." They are concerned you will drop out/not make enough money I think. Just ignore them and go to art college anyway. It's your life, not theirs.

Parents have this very confused yin yang thing going on.

They can drive you crazy between get out and oh no ..stay my precious baby. Problem is the messages get mixed and muddled...It comes out as "no, I'm not gonna give you two dollars to go to Philly" Translation: "cause you need to go to school closer to me".

The LPN part is especially poignant..."I struggled for 20 years to make something of myself" Translation: "I really envy that you will have your **** together 20 years before I did"

There's always love there...but when babies are leaving the nest ....emotions get all jumbully...
Love em and find your own $50.00. Good Luck

That art institute in Philly may be pretty expensive. It's not that they don't want you to achieve your dreams; it's just that they probably want you to go about achieving them in a cheaper way. Community colleges don't have to be inferior--they are just a cheaper way to get the same credits. I'm going to a community college right now because of that reason---it's A LOT easier on the wallet/pocket/purse! I actually got a full ride: all tuition and books paid for!
Do you have financial aid to go to a more prestigious school? Look around--there are usually scholarships to try for, and government grants.

Mom wants you to stay and help her with grumpyma. And grandma has had a stroke I quess, and lost the switch that tells her she souldn't say what she is thinking.
You don't owe anything and you don't have $50(?)
No one said that if it is right it will be easy. Is it right for you ? If so you will have to make the choice of moving ahead, even when you are not getting the support you were expecting. In the end your family will be proud of you. and if not, You will still know that you followed your bliss.

I agree with summerwind. It's your life and if you know that's what you want you should go for it. Anyways, it doesn't sound like putting some distance between you and your family would be a bad thing right now

only you can know what is best for you. even if art isnt right for you, you can never know that until you have that experience. if you let them hold you back, you'll regret it later. do what you think is best for yourself, not what anyone else says or wants

Parents try to hold kids down for whatever reason. They could also be testing you to see if you are good to go out on your own.

Please, I beg you so much not to give up on your dreams. Just get loans out. Call the place and tell them your mom will not give you the fifty to process. They can sometimes wave the application fee. Whatever you do do not give up on your dreams even if you have to ask your teacher for the money. You have a level headed mind.

As a parent and (going back to the dawn of time) a young person as well I can see both sides of your dilemma. Your parents want you to have a fall back position instead on relying "Artist", which they don't see as a way to make a "real" living. How many Rock Stars talk about their parents not believing that music was a career until the guy with the big hair and leather pants buys them a mansion? Thats their side of it. If you can see that then we are halfway there. May I suggest a compromise and take a course with a diploma at the end first. (I don't know, Barrista may even do it) Tell them thats how you're going to make a living whenever you're not earning as an artist. It could be that they just want to see that you have a Plan B.

If you really want to go, don't expect your mom and grandma to pay for you. Get off your backside and put yourself through. Work, take loans, and fricking stop acting like a spoiled 2 year old. No one owes you a life. No one has to pay for your education. If you want it badly enough, you'll stop whining and get moving!
