Liking to kill or willing to kill are two separate things. A serial killer likes to kill. Someone who is mentally unbalanced likes to kill. Most soldiers are bothered by taking the life of another human. I know, I'm a Vietnam vet. The thought of taking the lives of other humans still bothers me - after 37 years. It makes no difference that they would have killed me. I will be haunted by it till the day I die.

Unless something has changed since I learned of it, the US Military has 2 levels of Conscientious objector status. Being approved for one of them allows discharge from all military service. Usually, this is for a religious conversion while one is already in the military. A former customer of mine was trying to get this status, it was a very difficult fight for him and eventually his enlistment was due to be over, so he stopped.

Being approved for the other was far less onerous. This status allows an individual to serve in the military, just not in a role that places one in a direct position to kill. I have never heard of the ENTIRE US Military being deployed overseas; even in World War Two, there were many thousands of people who never left the USA-people working in shipping terminals, permanent party slots at every military facility, instructors for (probably) every job in the military, and many more. I personally knew a man who enlisted right after Pearl Harbor was attacked, and because of his civilian job skill, he served the entire war maintaining the phone system aboard a naval training base. He told me once that some of his fellow sailors had expressed a desire to contribute to the war effort, but had moral objections to killing.

Yes....There are lots of jobs in the military...Where you do not have to pick up a gun.....You can be a medic.......But lets face it....Just putting on the uniform makes you a target.....and that means that there is someone out there...That wants you in his cross hairs......Then you just might wish that you had that gun....Or risk losing your own life

I have never met a soldier who didn't HATE to kill. Sometimes that's the job, so they do what they must. It takes a heavy toll on them, from what I can see.

I was a soldier and it had nothing to do with my liking or disliking killing. There is so much more than that involved with the decision to enlist in any branch of the military.

Er...I've never actually met a soldier who enjoyed killing. They get trained to kill as part of their job, but it isn't the whole of being a soldier. A soldier can be in the military for 40 years and never shoot one person, or be in there 2 months and get sent to Afghanistan to pick em off like flies...It isn't a matter of what they like to do so much as what they have no choice to do.
