Resolved Question

Can you disprove the existence of God?

If you cannot disprove the existence of God, doesn't believing that He does not exist constitute "faith" in something that is not supported by facts? Is saying that God does not exist a false statement if it cannot be proven?

I think it would be impossible for a physical-dimension being like a human to definitively prove or disprove the existance of an infinite being (such as God is supposed to be). But I do think that one can make some "logical inferences" from what is observable, as to the existance or otherwise of a God.

I am sure (I believe strongly) that there is much in this universe that is going on, about which we cannot know while our sensing abilities are veiled in a human body. After death and release from this, it MAY be that we will have a better idea; but that will be too late to be useful for this life!

There are, of course, accounts of what the "after-death world" is like, from those few who have died and then been brought back to life and told of their experience. But again, an element of "faith" is required to take these accounts as representing truth, and not fantasy. I believe they are true; but it is a belief, I have to acknowledge.

Can you disprove the existance of the Flying Spaghetti Monster? No? Hmm.... Exactly.

The burden of proof of "God" is on the believers therein.

So, you have to prove it to me. I don't have to prove, or disprove your belief system.

By the way: hard to prove the existence of an invisible, and to this day, non existent entity. Believers of such things cannot even get there own stories straight.

This is a cyclical discussion, as no one ever budges.

As a cynic, a pessimist, and a no good bastard, I have absolutely no faith in anything. Evolution is a scientific fact that can be proven and added to. That is concrete.

Because the idea of "god" has been around so long, it doesn't sound foolish unless you wanna tear people's hopes down.

"A dictator in the sky demands our loyaly or he will send us to a firey underworld of torture and damnation if we so much as question him!"

Heil.

OK, look at it this way.

Sociological norms are the only place you will find any sign of god. where you find hints are when people say things like "God made it rain", "God works in mysterious ways", "The invisible hand of God guides us all". These are all social exchanges that have little basis besides the construction of cognitive reality within each originator. Cognitive reality has quite often been shown to be quite disconnected from what can be discovered through experimentation. I could point to nearly any disproved urban legend or folktale in the past for an example.

Where else? There are quantum physicists hunting down the subatomic particle that causes mass, and so far nothing that resembles a language that translates to anything human society has written about this mysterious creator throughout history. Certainly not there...

If you're mathematically inclined, let's take a stab at it this way. On earth, a simple equation exists, and since this is merely an example, let's say it's 42 = 42. This equation could represent nearly anything, like the DNA patterns responsible for particular coloring or the fact that sunflower seed arrangements are great repetitions of a single curve. Whatever the application, there's a reason and an equation for it. Now, we meet a theologian (any denomination will do, as long as God is part of the equation somewhere) and they will tell you that you're wrong, that the equation is not simply 42 = 42, but that it is actually (infinity) + 42 = -(infinity) + 42. (God giveth and taketh away) So you're left with a conundrum. Both models are technically mathematically correct, the equations balance, but when it boils down to it, this theoretical existence of an unknown infinity and its opposite end up making not a damned bit of difference to the equation. You can point to any miracle you want to and there's a negative version of it somewhere in the world. So can you disprove God using this model? No, but for you to prove it somehow DOES exist would mean you'd have to somehow change the way the world works on a fundamental level.

Then...we can talk. Until then, have fun trying to find a non-zero God solution.

God gave every person the measure of faith to find Him. I wish more people would find that measure of faith inside themselves instead of listening to the lies of this world. I'm sure God is saddened by what He reads here - but not at all surprised.

I dislike the word" God" Usually, it is a reference to the outdated' tribalist' notion, of a'thunder and lightning' -these-are - the -rules God that rewards good and punishes the bad guys;even at sporting events. You wind it up on Sundays and walk away.
Or, you can bcome so brainwashed, do deeply introverted, you would kill any one, or destroy any-thing, that is or might be not directly related to your doctrine.

It's a trap.

IMO: The origin of consciousness (or Soul);God, is well beyond the mental catagories of existance and non-existance. Has no location in space, is indifferent to time and suffering, will never be comprehended by mankind.

Proof denies faith, and it goes the other way too. If one could ever prove/disprove god, then *poof* no more faith.

No, I can't disprove the existence of God. And I feel no need to prove or disprove it. I think people who believe are welcome to it. I'm just not one of them. I'm pretty sure that I've seen the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I see your line of reasoning, but there's a problem with it. No one ever questioned the existence or validity of "faith."
You do have a point in that atheists and believers (of anything whatsoever) are alike in that they have varying degrees of faith in their beliefs.

My faith is in reality. I worship reality and seek its truth everyday. The truth of reality, as I have come to understand it at this point in my life, doesn't seem to involve anything resembling the existence of a "god."

Ahhhh, now that would depend on which God you are referring to, or are you referring to all the Gods conjured up by all the worlds religions?
God to one person can be different to another, according to them!
Do you support any of the worlds organised religious groupings could be a better question?
Most people support one religion or another because they have been indoctorinated from birth that theirs is the only religion.
Anybody who really thinks about it can see that all religious groupings are self serving faith groups, that choose to believe their own rubbish and foist it on others, often leading to violent conflict that kills fellow human beings. Nice Huh!

Wow, this is very different from your fart question lol...
I myself happen to be agnostic, and I agree with you, but on a different level. I do not believe God exists because I have no proof. However, if I were to witness something that otherwise proves my opinion, I would possibly consider being more religious. Rather than blindly trust something, I choose to not trust it because it is more practical.
So, to answer your question, I don't think you can disprove the existence of God any more than proving His existence. And this is why people develop their own religious ideas about the existence of God.

I think us being here is proof of God, but proof and faith must run side by side. If you cannot prove that something happened, why have faith in it? I think faith, is believing in something that could have occured, that everybody has different opinions of.

NO I Can't, but honestly I'd rather just have faith that we are not alone in our existance. It's surely a nice thought that if you're a good person and do good things and are truely sorry for the things you shouldn't have done or thought that there's something more. That belief keeps me sane in uncertian times and these truely are uncerian times.

wow, that response above me from fluidmind was obviously from a really smart person. The Lord has blessed you with intelligence. I would reccomend dave Van Koevring and David Herzogg for you. The first is a quantum physicist who talks about God as revealed through quantum physics. He's also my friends God father, so know him personally, and while you don't know me from Adam, I can personally testify to his intelligence, and faith, and his ability to reveal God to you through math that is far more difficult than 42=42. And his wife is an amazing intercessor. She prayed for me before i went to Israel. that was cool. At the airport a lady with a broken thumb was working at the counter, and I prayed for her once and it stopped hurting. Then while waiting I was bored, and reading about faith, so i asked her if I could pray again. This time i asked her to take off the brace. We watched her thumb un swell, and trun from purple to normal right before our eyes. somehwere like 2 minutes time. Then she went from typing in pain to man handling luggage with that hand. But you said miracles don't impress you b/c there are ambiguous opposites out there. So I won't dwell on that.

Rather i want to adress one thing. You said that if there was an unknown infinity that could be there but you would never know, it would not be true that He doesn't affect you at all. Rather the opposite, He affects you completely, and the invisible to you affect is the most important thing you don't know about! It would seem to me, that IF there is an X factor God who affects everything, one who is uncreated, therefore superior to everyone and everything that is created, one who made us (at least part of us) immortal, if such a God exists, then it would be the most important thing in the world, to find out who He is and What He wants. In fact the mere possiblity, that you are immortal (again not your body, but a part of you) and that you are going to either be blessed or suffer eternally based on the desire of an unknown God, that it would be the single most beneficial thing you could ever do, to know what that God wants from you, if anything. Therefore officially shifting the burden of proof to the side of the unbeliever. Because if you are not SURE, more so than of anything else, as sure as you are that you exist, that there is not such a being, you are in affect playing Russian Roulet on a scale you cannot even fathom. Since any protion of time, is exactly 0% of infinity, you could not possibly grasp the concept of eternity, eternal reward, or eternal suffering.

And while on the topic of eternal suffering, the fact of the matter is, to base the lack of God on the fact that you don't like what people say about Him, is total nonsense. For starters, they could actually be wrong. You need to know Him for yourself. But secondly, an ant cannot argue with you if you tell it it isn't allowed in your kitchen and then you squash it. It has no defense. How much bigger than you would an uncreated being be? Even if He is cruel and unfair, you don't have much say in the matter, so instead of arguing about it, maybe you should do the only wise thing and find out what He wants whether you like it or not. And perhaps, when you get over the initial bits about not doing what you currently think is ok, you may even perhaps find the new you that obeys the new rules you didn't know (but are blessed to discover you can actually know) existed is actually happier than the old you.

But beyond that, the point is simply this. Are you more sure of the fact that there is no God than anything and everything else you know? Because if you are not, if there is any possibility otherwise, it would benefit you to find out. Before you are squashed. And the rest of us make like the dolphins in "Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" And wave good bye saying we tried to tell you, sorry you didn't listen.

There is a God, His name is Jesus. He wrote the laws of the univers, and they are not neccesarily what you think they are. He says that all of us are guilty of breaking at least one of these laws, so none of us are Holy and get to go to heaven just b/c we are "Good" we aren't Perfect, and that is the standard He demands. So all of us, every single one, has to go to hell, UNLESS, we accept His free get out of hell card, which is Him, Jesus, the Son of God, born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, and paid the price for all of our sins. If you want to be with Him forever simply pray this prayer with me.

Here's a couple definitions so we're on the same page. Sin is simply breaking the law. Whether you knew the law or not, He holds us all accountable for it. And if you ever broke it, which you did, you are a "sinner" and by His standard you deserve death. But you don't have to get it. So don't get mad.
Repent, means to turn away. It is not an apology, it is a going the other direction move. To repent means to be sorry, and plan on not doing it again. (how do you know what "it" is, well read a bible. But don't worry the Holy Spirit will convict you so you know.)

OK here we go,
Jesus,
I recognize that you are God.
I am a sinner and I repent for my sins.
I realize that I don't deserve it, but you forgive me for free. And I receive your free forgiveness. Jesus I plead your blood over my sins, and i thank you that you remove them from me, as far as the east is from the west. Lord teach me to walk in your ways, and draw me close to you. I can't do it alone, but i can do all things through you. Thank you for saving me. Come live in my heart Lord. Come fill me with your Holy Spirit now, and give me the grace to go and sin no more! In Jesus mighty name

Amen

and you don't have to pray all that exactly if yo don't want, just put it in your own words, and make sure you point out that you broke the law, you deserve death, and Jesus death paid that debt for you, and so you get off for free by beleiving in Him. Now go and pray to Jesus every day and night. Outloud and in your thoughts. Get a bible and read it. And get connected with other believers. Message me if you want to, I can help you some. And I will pray for you as well. And would love to know you prayed that prayer. And that's the other thing. Stop doing the things you shouldn't, and start telling people about Jesus. The bible says whoever is ashamed of me before men, I will be ashamed of before my father in heaven. So do not be ashamed, but proudly tell the world about Jesus. God bless you. -Aidan
