Resolved Question

Christians think they are better?

I continually see people accuse Christians of thinking that they are better than everyone else. I have not seen that many judgemental Christians here although I know they do exist

So is it that they really believe that the Christians believe them better, or the accusers secretly feel that Christians are better.

koytaph, I think it is the other way around.Christians are continually criticized.I do not see salvation as a game.I have never believed myself better.

Do christians think they are better? Yes, for the most part. I am christian. I don't think of myself as "better" just "better off", if you understand. That being said, to demonize christians for this is redundant. It is the nature of man to think they are better than others. You don't have to be a christian. Atheists think they are better because they don't submit to an imaginary being, therefore they believe they have a better hold of themselves than do people of religion.
ALL people of religion think they are better than others, just as other races of people think they are better. It isn't a religion thing, it is a human thing.

Hi live4god33
I think it is worse than that. Much worse.
In my short time on ep I have reason to believe that some Christians think other people are less than they.
This is much worse than thinking yourself better - although I suppose the effect is the same.
I do not secretly think anyone is better or worse than anyone else. I do not believe it at all.
I think something is wrong with a belief system which allows a believer to treat a non believer as a game.
:)

Well, I know that I am a Christian and I certainly don't think myself to be better than anyone else. I have a quick temper and I sin.

I'm a christian. I don't think I'm better or worse than anybody else. And I don't really care what people think about christians, but I do care about others.

Any christian who thinks it's their duty to convert others to christianity does so because they believe only christians are blessed and are going to heaven. All christians have this belief.

Therefore, ALL CHRISTIANS THINK THEY ARE BETTER.

THE ANSWER - Christianities core beliefs are based ENTIRELY on hearsay and circumstantial evidence. Yet they gain benefits from these beliefs (a community to belong, a sense of security). Benefits that are at the heart of our primal needs (Maslow's hierarchy of needs see Wiki for details). They feel the need to hang on to these tenuous beliefs and claims by standing resolutely in the face of reality and live in denial. Yes they will argue that talking snakes are real and that even though the new testerment mirrors the scriptures of previous religions they are right and you are wrong. They have no choice, but to act self righteous... it's all they've got. eg: If you yell loudly enough eventually it becomes real.

Having said that, some Christians I have met in my travels have excelled at being humble and pious. But I have found the same rare few in Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist and Tao communities. So it's not the religion that determines this rather the individuals ability to elevate themselves above the likes of us mere mortals.

The truth is all of us - born on earth are sinners...and we all need God. We cannot earn God's approval. And God does not sell his approval in exchange of good deeds done by us or when we keep a set of rules.

People of any religion who believe that God's approval can be earned by good works or by keeping a set of rules..look down on people who dont keep their 'rules'.

And that is called self-righteousness! Sad to say, many christians are self-righteous and so are people of other religions as well. They sincerely believe that they can earn God's blessings by their actions and he will be obliged to bless them because of what they do - sincerely wrong!

The Bible clearly says that righteousness cannot be earned by keeping the law and righteousness is a gift from God. Jesus kept all the law perfectly and also bore the punishment for breaking the law so that we can have his righteousness and Everyone who receives God's gift of righteousness, through Jesus as a gift is approved and accepted by God.

So, it is not a matter of who is better than who...we all have sin in us and so, we all can receive the gift of righteousness!

i belive that just like everyone elese a person who is christian thinks (even in their head) that they may be better than someone elese, but so does everyone elese by you writing this its saying that u are better than christians if ur saying that ur on the opposing end of the statement. your judging and casting blame, so these christians that you say are judgemental you are being just as judgemental if not more than them. Jesus said to those persecuting an adultress woman "ye without sin cast the first stone." remember you cannont define a sect , church, family, organization, team, etc by a few as an example . also remember that "christians" just like muslims, jews, wiccans, etc are all people and are all different. we will sin, noone is perfect except for Christ. :) amen, i would not want the burden to be perfect.

Jesus told us to Boldly go in his name.
We can be powerfull in Jesus name. We however are nothing more than a crumb under the table.
I want to be able to help people not judge.
That song i'll not write it but it springs to mind.
Father Grant that i might not seek so much to be consoled as to console.
Yet I beg for consolance on a daly basis.
I am next to useless.
So here is one Christian below all others.

I do not think that MOST Christians think they are better than other people... I think that some do, but it isn't because they are Christian but do to some other problem... Christians aren't perfect we all sin.

There are a lot of Christians that think they are better. But I don't know what they think they are better than. All are equal in the eyes of God but maybe they think they have the inside track to heaven. If they do, they better think again.

My ex g/f was like this and I have a lot of 4 & 5 letter adjectives to describe her.

To be first, you must be last. And those that think they're better, need to take a good long look in their mirror sometime.

i don't have similar interests or beliefs as most "christians" and i don't really hang around them. most of the people that i know who are christian often make comments about god or the bible and i'm not interested. i don't think i'm better than you and i don't think you're better than me. but that doesn't mean i have to believe in or agree with something that i don't believe in or agree with.

Good question. I don't really know that I've met any who think they're better than others. I have met some that keep trying to get me to go to church, but that's about the extent of it. You're going to get people who think they're better than others, no matter what race or realigios denomination. It's ignorant and judgemetnal but very alive.

I really wish this topic would die a quiet death..it raises so much umpleasantness on EP all the time. sillymoo said it very well. There are a group of Christians that are very evangelical and want to convert everyone. No matter the reason behind this- whether it may be compassion, faith, love etc it can come accross as feeling suoerior or believing something superior as that person needs to be 'saved' from their current life and beliefs. any christian who is not aware of this with all apologies is naive. i have muslim friends who acknowledge that muslim extremists exist. I think anyone that quiretly goes about their business will never have these issues.

The world is so full of judgement and intolerance that it would be so nice not to have to see it here on EP although EP is obviously apart of the world.

People should set an example by leading exemplary lives that make people want to be like them not bu judging and harassing people to ocnvert to their religion.

This is the problem with religion, far from uniting us, they divide us into 'us' and 'them'

Christian core believes are extremely well-rooted in a very straightforward and amazingly scholarly devout people (The Jews) who's culture and life 100% depended on the preservation of their sacred text. People will say there are inconsistencies but never go farther than that because they have neither studied or gone beyond their usual Sunday morning Bible study and hearsay.

Having said that, I've met a lot of douche-bag Christians that didn't just think they were better than "heathens" but better than other Christians. But I've also met a lot of Christians who are genuine and think "better than" is a childish term, and has no place in their lives. You'll find your saints and devils with any group of people in any religion. (Or school. Or workplace.) Does that make sense?

Poor Christians. They have to secretly believe they are "better", more "enlightened", going to heaven and you're not - nyah, nyah, nyah. That's the line they've been sold. That's the whole point. There's really nothing else there folks.

Now, to be fair, some will try to share the goodies - get you to become "one with the Borg" and drop your rational thought. They are very open-minded about this (thank you very much) and will accept any level of degraded and ignorant human being (big of them - eh?) to add to their ranks. The only criteria being that they must mouth the words and do the dance, and check their mind at the door to the 13th Century.

Now, all that said, let's get real - all labelled groups of humans who accept their label and identify themselves with it, consider themselves to be "better" than anyone else who is not recognized as wearing that label. Christians don't have a corner on this market. it is a primitive, tribal, behavior; one that is observable in primates of other species as well (chimps will kill and eat other chimps identified as "outsiders").

So, lay off the Christians folks they're no worse than most anyone else. And, it would be the "Christian" thing to do.

The great apostle Paul said I am the chief sinner. Many pastors have said of the church, "it is a place where sinners can come together in search of God's wisdom". Christian's are not better, just believe with all their heart they have the right answer to life here and eternity after. They know the way off the sinking ship and will tell everyone they meet how to get off the ship safely. Some will argue, some will ignore, and others will agree and follow.
Christian's are one of the few religious groups who should reliaze we are not any better than anyone else. The only thing that seperates us from the rest is our relationship with Lord of Creation. It is his work and sacrafice that allow us to tell others about him not about us. As with most things in this life so it is in the life after this, it is all in who you know.
