Collective nouns - History?

there the more familiar ones like: pride of lions. army of ants. herd of buffalo. I have also seen some strange/funny, unfamiliar ones like: romp of otter. passel of possum smack of jellyfish crash of rhinocerouses
been told, that its an oddity of the English language.
anyone have any insight ?

Here's a weird one - a murder of crows

No idea where these terms originated but you might find more info on wikipedia.

The oxford dictionary of the history of words might be of some help. But the English language is weird.

They do sound funny. But I've only heard of Army of ants! The England Language sounds complex though. What does Oxford Blues really mean?
