I believe so.

However, the parents should be grooming the child to understand just how important modesty is, and make her understand the importance of remaining inside a protective circle of friends and family.

Jon Benet is a pretty good example of what can happen, too, if a child is made out to be too much like an adult.

Look at what is happening to Miley Cyrus. She also, is a prime example of teenage exploitation. Her parents aren't protecting her, she's wearing sexually alluring clothes, and if that wasn't bad enough, she's making sexual advances from the stage: and she only 16 years old. I have nothing against her, but ya know, if a 16 year old girl is being heralded as a sex symbol on CBS News, there is a tremendous problem with morality.

So, certainly, pageantry is damaging to children.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

Why do we give these girls a false sense of what beauty really is? Life is hard enough. Let your little girls be what they are LITTLE GIRLS. They do not need the pressure of winning at such a young age. All little children are beautiful. That is what we should instill into our children.

I was a beauty pagent winner all of my young life. When I had gotten older I did not know what to do when I failed at something.

Instead of beauty, gear your child towards education, trust, sports and the belief of a higher power.

I think they teach little girls to be vapid and materialistic from a young age, so yes.

They are. Incalculably. And not only for the children.

Absolutely. Beauty pageants teach children- not just girls, but boys, too- that looks are everything. They grow up vapid and end up unhappy when they look back on their childhood and realize they could've spent that time they spent making dance routines doing math homework or talking with friends.

Not to mention, the parents are so wrapped up in their world they don't see their children.
