First of all, there is only about a one week period or less during each cycle that a woman can get pregnant. It starts a few days before ovulation and lasts until about 2 days after ovulation. Ovulation is when the egg is released and may become fertilized. Most women have about 10-14 days from the beginning of their period to ovulation and another 10-14 days after ovulation to their next period. So in a nutshell, if it was your actual period the answer is no, you cannot get pregnant on your period.
Now if you were on hormonal birth control and stopped taking it, there is a chance that you could be bleeding and not be on your actual period. In that case you could be pregnant.
As far as I'm aware there isn't a test sensitive enough to detect the pregnancy hormone until around the time you should have your period. I would use an over the counter test about 2 weeks after you had sex, and use an EPT or equivalent, they are more sensitive.
