I formerly believed that NO ONE, not even those in criminal justice, had the right to take another life, even if that person whose life would be taken had killed another.
Now, there was recently a murder in my town. It happened before I moved here, but I kept up with the murder case and everything. I won't go into detail of what the guy did to this 19-year-old college girl, but it was horrible and cruel. I can't even look at a picture of the guy because I get the most awful feeling from it. When I think about his cruel intent, and what he put her through before finally killing her, I don't even have words. I believe it was right when he was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to death.
In Kansas, the death penalty is reserved only for those who committed the cruelest pre-meditated murders.
One of my friends thinks right after we find someone guilty, we should just take them out back and hang them on the spot....I'm not that extreme, but people say that the death penalty actually costs more than life in prison because of all the appeals. I would then put a time limit on how long a person can be on death row before being executed. That would cut the costs.
So yes, I believe in the death penalty, but it must be implemented carefully, in that, it doesn't become too common or too scarce in murder cases.

Why should I pay to house and feed some social misfit who goes around murdering other people? Or raping them? Or maiming or disfiguring them?

Why should my hard labor be their sustenance? And what, pray tell, does Society need of or have any real hope to acquire from those people?

Seems to me they are dross - bad results - to be weighed and cast aside.

No, for two reasons:

1. I don't believe that the death penalty achieves its purpose of deterring crime.

2. The cost of prosecuting and administering the death penalty, most especially the numerous appeals and actions associated with it, works out to be more than the cost of maintaining the same prisoner in a max-security cell.

Some people may "need" killing ... but the cost is prohibitive and the effect on those who might commit future crimes is apparently minimal.

I struggle with this one... my initial thought is no I don't agree with it, but if this person committed a murder against someone in my family... then I might think differently. It's tough, I would want to be the bigger person and say no. Killing someone is not the answer.
I hate this topic! :/

Well, it boils down to your belief of justice. Someone kills someone, does society owe it to that person to kill the killer? Is killing (in any sense) ever right? If not, than do two wrongs in fact make a right?

I say I believe in the death penalty, but only on the basis that we need to thin out the herd anyways; it has nothing to do with my personal morality.

It makes damn sure they never get a chance to kill again, so yes.

I agree with midlifemadness. Killing someone isn't the answer, whether it's homocide or the death penalty. There should at least be a choice of the death penalty or a life sentence.

I do not believe the death penalty is a constructive thing, however in a unrelated moment, sometimes there are people who just need killing.

Troubleshooter just took almost the exact same words out of my mouth. Although I've argued both sides before.

For some, yes. I don't believe it's a deterrent, as it's meant to be, but it sure stops repeat offenders. It should be used for those that murder children, or sexually abuse them. Always.

I look on it as euthanasia more than a penalty but I don't agree with it because their are to many flaws in the system and you end up killing the wrong people.

If someone chooses to behave worse than a rabbid animal (or is unable to act otherwise) then why shouldn't they be put to sleep like one?

Preferably, if they are beyond possible rehabilitation, they should be forced to contibute to society in whatever way is best suited. One example would be for them to run treadmills all day to generate electricity. This way you reduce crime AND pollution.

No.. I don't think anybody should have the right to decide whether or not a person lives or dies even if the person up for debate did something horrible. I don't, however, approve that those imprisoned get offered parole, early bail, education, play time, etc.

God kills indiscriminately. Nature kills indiscriminately. War kills indiscriminately. Why do WE have such a hard time with it?

I do believe in the death penalty, a humane death, not as a deterrent or punishment, but as simply removing a dangerous element from society. Will innocent people die? Yes, and that is tragic. But that is a failing of the investigator, of the lawyer, not the executioner. If we improve forensic science, we may be able to keep the wrongly convicted from ever winding up on death row. But those found guilty should meet their fate swiftly and with a minimum of appeals.
