The guy making the calendar got fired and they did not have a replacement due to downsizing. They figuered they had more than enough time to get a new calendar guy. Well that did not obviously happen.

booradley	Posted Nov 6th, 2009 at 6:50AM You mean the whole "end of the world" thing"? I thought it was supposed to be December 12th. At any rate, no, it's not true. That's like saying that we believe that the world ends each December 31st just because our calendars start over every year. The Mayan calendar was written in 500 year cycles. The current (last) cycle of their calendar ends in December 2012. It's not that they thought the world would end then, it's just that their civilization didn't survive long enough for them to need to create another calendar. Rated: +3Vote for this!

theoveranalyst	Posted Nov 6th, 2009 at 12:50PM This is mostly based on the Mayan calander. The Mayan's used the stars and planets as the blueprint for their calander. Just as a clock resets to the next day at midnight, they placed significance to the realignment of the planets with the center of the galaxy. Midnight is the end of our day so they reasoned that when the planets lined up it must be the end of something. I think it's pagan hogwash. If the Mayans were so smart, then why didn't the predict their own demise long ago? That shows you how good they were at prophecy. Rated: +1Vote for this!
