Wrong security encryption has nothing to do with it, even if you'd use the "right" encryption it wouldn't mean a lot, someone with a rainbow table could still easily enter your network in a matter of hours. The thing you mean is that certain models always have the same code, be it WEP or something else, it's the factory code, you can change this one so that people will not be able to access your router itself, and then there's your actual, in laymans terms, "internet password", the code you type in to gain access to the internet using your router as a medium, or modem if that's the case. So your router has actually 2 different passwords, the one to access the router itself and change settings, and the password the access the internet with. You'll have to look out and make sure the first one is well-secured. But in the end, if someone were to be really determined to gain access to your network and also your router, it'll happen anyway, nothing is 100% secure.

WPA is just another security since WEP is full of holes, cracking WPA is just a matter of time as well, might take some more time but it'll happen anyways. And then you have the danger of downloading agents, keyloggers and backdoors, while virusses are kinda uncommon these days (unless you do something really, really stupid) there's still a chance for you to get them. But could you explain why cracking the WPA is ineffective? I sure wouldn't call cracking it useless.
