When you thump the watermelon it should make a thud sound. If it pings when you thump it it is green. The curl is at the stem where the watermelon is connected to the vine. When the curl dies or turns brown it means the melon is close to being ripe. I have had some varieties though that the curl dying didn't mean anything. Thumping is the best way I have found. Putting pressure on the melon and listening for a crush sound works but it does shorten the life of the melon for market but you are not concerned with that so try this. Place your hand on the center of the melon. Push downward and listen for a crush sound coming from the melon. If it makes this sound it is ready to eat.<br />
