Did you know that grade school teachers try to intimidate kids into following the teacher's political beliefs?

It's not just university professors anymore. And it seems that the teachers who do this are those on the progressive vanguard? How is shutting down a seven year old liberal or progressive?

Is This A Good Question? (8)

Oh yeah I remember seeing this video on youtube about some gay awareness thing in an American school and at the teachers meeting before hand they were basically saying that children who believed that homosexuality was wrong should be told that they're wrong which set alarm bells ringing for me.

I say it all the time: liberals are not liberal. They are always in favour of telling people that they must think a certain way, they're always in favour of banning speech they don't like, they're always seeking to ban and regulate things they don't like and they're always seeking to indoctrinate rather than educate.

And this plays out in our school system as well as the American one where education, which used to be about teaching a child how to reason and how to think and form arguments so that they could reach their own opinions, is now reduced to teachers telling pupils what they should think and shaming them if they don't.

That's not liberalism; liberalism is the position that people are entitled by their natural rights to think, say and believe whatever they want as long as they do not violate the rights of other people. If someone is racist, homophobic or whatever that is their choice and they have the right to be so and express their opinion freely. "Liberals" will disagree with this because "liberals" want to shape society into a certain form which they label progressive and then legislate and regulate it so that the new orthodoxy cannot be challenged.

We really need to start reclaiming "liberal" for the actual liberals. If you are a socialist you are not a liberal. If you are left wing you are left wing you are not in favour of human rights because individual freedoms are not congruent with the utilitarian ethics of "the greater good". Restricting people because you disagree with them is not maximising liberty. Restricting people because they say things which are not nice does not make you a nice person, it makes you worse than they are.

It's curious because if you read the rhetoric of 19th century socialists they openly said that they were out to destroy liberalism with it's, as they saw it, idiotic notions of human rights but now liberal and socialist are synonymous. It's time people who believe in maximisng human freedom start calling themselves liberals again and calling out idiots who call themselves liberal while speaking in favour of curtailing civil liberties.

Education is bristling with far left extremest. I have kids in grade school and I constantly have to correct the teaching they receive because a lot of it is blatant lying. So it's Google...books...History Channel.. etc.. My oldest knows now to just ignore them, get the grade, and get out.

Just shows how easy it is to manipulate kids. We should let them come to their own conclusion.

My son knows we all have opinions and he doesn't have to agree with his teachers. He just has to be respectful but he has his own criteria and he comes back home and does his own research. We are always going to run into someone trying to brain wash us, we just need to have integrity.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.

Had a nun in grammar school -- taught us songs about the IRA--I guess she was Irish :))

Yup, even when I was in elementary school, around 2nd grade, my teachers lied about historical things such as why the Civil War occurred. I have heard/seen teachers/professors lie or downplay significant reasons about why the Crusades occurred as well.

Many people believe teaching scientific and historic fact is "preaching". Just look at what Texas has tried to ban from its school books

Yes, crazy parents, but that is not what this question is about. It's about attempting to indoctrinate children with a political ideology.

We all do this whether consciously or not. Your political beliefs are what help to form you and being a teacher, no matter how you try to stay neutral, your objectives are subject to your political convictions. However, if they are good teachers they will also teach the children to make their own decisions and create well rounded, free thinking people.

That's not what I am talking about. Nice attempt to dodge the question, though.

Wasn't trying to dodge the question, just simply giving my opinion. Obviously things in schools are different between UK and USA but here in UK I have never come across a teacher who openly tries to intimidate a 7 year old through political belief. Just MY experience.

Give an example of how and/or when this happened - as explained by the child and not their parent.
