Part of the Japanese invasion of China. Terrible massacre of civilians, and more. It led to many war-crime executions after the war.

    Not in school, but I've seen documentaries and read books---hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians raped, tortured, and killed by Japanese occupation forces who often liked to take photos of what they were doing and send them home to Japan. Some chilling and sick stuff. The Nazi representative in the city was one of many people who tried to save the civilians, things were so horrible.
