In the first place, he didn't "discover" America anymore than I discovered Europe. In the second place, AIDS was not known before the late 1970s. There was an interesting exchange of diseases when Europeans met native Americans, though. The Europeans got syphilis and the native Americans got cholera and smallpox, which decimated their poplulation. For the first century or so, syphilis was far more virulent to Europeans, but then it settled down and became merely debilitating.
