The best thing that you can do to fight wrinkles is to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure and alcohol intake and have a healthy diet.
Don't waste money on expensive creams. My skin is in better condition now at 28 than it was when I was 18 and I use cheap moisterizers and don't even moisterize every day. Drinking lots of water and eating lots of fruit and veges helps the skin much more than any cream would. Only so much can penetrate the skin, but if you take care of yourself on the inside then it will show on the outside. Moisterizer doesn't hydrate the skin, it just helps your skin retain the moister that it already has. To hydrate the skin you need to drink plenty of water, and fruits and veges will provide it with nutrience.
I personally use coco butter as a moisterizer and fresh aloe vera from the plant every now and then. I wear sunscreen and never sunbake.
It's not important at all to look super-young, but you may as well take care of your skin if you can. There is no need to spend large amounts of money oh expensive crap, because if you take care of yourself on the inside then you wont need it and if you don't take care of yourself, then it wont work.

I think I agree with you - the fact that I'm in advertising generally keeps me from buying a lot of crap I don't need.
