They can work, but only to a certain extent. The big problem with it is because of the distance, it's hard to stay attached when you're building a life somewhere else. And when your seperated for a really long time, you start forgetting what that person is really like. You start questioning their actions. My longest relationship long distance was a year and a half (more or less). It ended because cheating had become a problem. Not being in a local relationship can feel like you're not in one at all when you're out with your friends or at home with nothing to do and no one to call. They can only work if you guys can find a way to keep it going is by keeping a lot of communication going.
In my experience, they last about two years before you both grow too far apart.
