In AUstralia, it's fairly common, particularly in the construction and hydrocarbons industry.

The unions here are very strong in some areas/cities.

Whilst I beleive they have their place, I think they need to stop looking for excuses for getting more and more- they're getting greedy...

People go on strike in all free countries, and some not so free! I remember the 70's in Britain when the unions could do what they liked and were bringing the country to it's knees! In Europe strikes were called the 'British disease'!...Then along came Margaret Thatcher! The fight was bloody and long, but now we have more or less sensible unions! That's not to say we still don't have strikes, we do! But nothing like we used to have! All hail Maggie!!

The unions will destroy a country if not kept under control

No, but often.
Strikes are needed to keep up the standards but some jobs aren't even needed and only exist to keep people busy. If anyone can do their job then there is a reason for why they can't get rich from it. If hookers would go on a strike, they would threaten all loose people for doing their job for free.

I live in scotland, in the UK. We quite often get strikes, but they are organised strikes by the union.
A week or so back our bus drivers striked, last year the dinnerladies did, both of which are relatively small with short periods of time, but a few years ago the firebrigade was on strike for months, tha was pretty bad. Army trucks had to come in and deal with fires, they were very slow in comparison... alsolutely terrible.
