That is called substitution...and if someone who has an obsessive habit...such as cigarette smoking....can find a less harmful habit to substitute for the habit of smoking...it is possible to break the addiction.

Depends on what kind of addiction it is and how much it ill interferes with your life. It's always finds a new hole when one gets covered.

Honestly, quite a lot of addictions are always there in the background just waiting for the opportunity to come back out. Events can trigger the behavior to start all over again, although addictions can be switched to other addictions sometimes.
